The treble response is a little softer than with other, sometimes bright, open back Audio Technica models, making the ATH-R70x easy to listen to for long periods and easier to listen to with pop, brighter recordings or lower quality files.
Ultra light weight at 210g with large ear cups, a replaceable 3m cable and a carry bag. The ATH-R70x is a 470 ohm headphone with high sensitivity, so it is not too hard to power, but is meant to pair with a non-usb powered headphone amp.
The R70x is one of a few models that are made in Japan.
TheVerge.com: The Definition of Neutral Headphones: the R70x somehow defy old preconceptions. They’re neutral and detailed enough to be used for serious studio work, and yet pleasant and fun enough to also charm amateur ears
"Took a chance with these because there was not many reviews online and couldn't try them locally so I crossed my fingers while addind to my cart and I am not disappointed at all. They are feather weight which is awesome. It is truly the first pair of headphones that I can really forget when I wear it. The earcups are a good size for my ears/head but if you got big ones it ""might"" be a problem. The sound is quite good ... it reminds me of the Sennheiser HD650 a lot while I like the comfort better on the R70x, I did prefer the soundstage of the Senn's. They do not look like a pair of 400$ headphone but they do sound like one. They sure did a better job with their wings system compared to that ATH-ADXXX's or ATH-AXXX's. One point that is annoying is knowing which one is the left side and which one is the right one ! I've put a little white sticker to make it easier. They are rated at 470 ohms but they are OK to drive. Tried with my Marantz HD-DAC1 low gain without any problem and got a really good match, my stack of Schiit Modi 2U & Magni2U at high gain and it was ok. Also tried with a Fiio X5 on high gain and it was quite impressive for a portable player to drive these fairly well. Overall, a good pair of headphones not fatiguing in any ways that makes a good job with most styles of music."
