Cayin RU6 R2R Dac, portable dongle dac with balanced 4.4mm amp output. RU6 uses the sought after R2R Resistor Ladder dac design - known for its natural tone, it is new in this price range and in a micro sized portable product.
We like that the RU6 has a volume control custom designed by Cayin for a compact r2r application - 99 volume levels, thanks to sets of resistors and micro relays, will provide total control of the volume to match with any high sensitivity earphone and a noise free, black background.
RU6 is compatible with IOS, iPadOS, mac OS, Android and Windows. Free driver for windows on Cayin website. usb-c -c cable included, iphone owners can buy optional usb-c - lightning cable.
Cayin Ru6 specs:
I am extremely glad I bought the Cayin RU6, it sounds incredibly good, so different from any other dac or dongle I’ve owned. It sounds smooth as butter, expansive and detailed, just excellent!!!
This could be the lowest priced R2R DAC on the market. Compared to most of the other USB dongle DACs I own this one is about 1.5 to 3 times more expensive. So the big question is whether it's worth that price increment. It took me a while to come up with a definitive opinion and the answer is it depends. The RU6 is capable of reproducing tonal nuance but I found on many recordings it was hard to discern a major difference. But with better recordings its superior refinement in terms of tonality and timbre became much more evident. It doesn't gloss over or sugarcoat bad or inferior recordings. I started off using my Campfire Orion IEMs then switched over to my Shure SE846 which brought out its tonal qualities even more on the best recordings. This isn't necessarily the case on some of my other USB dongle DACs where using the better IEM doesn't produce a commensurate level of improvement. The one area where the RU6 really shines are with vocals. Well recorded vocals have a special quality to them and the RU6 teases out a lot of expressiveness and inner detail from vocals. So I will add this to the ddHiFI TC44B and Hidisz S9 Pro as my choice of top USB Dongle DACs.
I cannot believe how long it’s been since I’ve heard such natural sound. Realistic sound stage and imaging. Comfortable and no fatigue. Be aware however, it doesn’t come with any equalization, and best use eliminates software control of the volume… but the sound!
My purchase decision was influenced by the very positive press reviews, and a curiosity about R2R DACs. I was not disappointed. I am using my iPad Pro, successfully driving Focal Elegias, and Audeze LCD-XC. Enjoying the spacious sound stage and accurate imaging, as well as the quality of the music.
